To improve the chance of being mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI search, make your website technically accessible, publish distinctive and verifiable content, clarify the brand entity and earn credible third-party references. AI systems choose sources differently, so no single schema tag or page can guarantee a mention.
1. Make important content accessible
Pages should return successful status codes, render useful indexable content, use stable canonical URLs and be linked internally. Check robots.txt, meta robots rules and security layers that may block legitimate crawlers.
For ChatGPT search, OpenAI's current publisher guidance says not to block OAI-SearchBot if you want content included in summaries and snippets. GPTBot is a separate control related to potential training, so discovery and training preferences can be managed separately. Review the current OpenAI publisher guidance before changing crawler rules.
2. Establish a clear brand entity
Use one consistent organization name, description, location, service set and official URL across the website and credible profiles. Add Organization schema with verified social or portfolio links and clear contact details.
Entity clarity also comes from natural language: state what the company does, who it serves and where it operates in the first paragraphs of key pages.
3. Publish content worth citing
Generic claims rarely deserve a citation. Create information that answers a real decision with direct experience:
- transparent methods or pricing frameworks;
- original benchmarks or aggregated project findings;
- detailed case studies with constraints and outcomes;
- balanced comparisons;
- expert explanations of complex workflows;
- location-specific information unavailable in generic guides.
Label estimates and assumptions. Accuracy and transparency matter more than confidence of tone.
4. Structure answers for extraction
Use question-based H2 headings, lead with a complete 40–60 word answer and then support it. Comparison tables, ordered processes and concise definitions make relationships easier to understand.
Do not repeat the same answer in every section. Each passage should add a distinct part of the topic.
5. Support claims with evidence
Link to original, authoritative sources for standards, platform rules and public data. Add named authors with relevant experience and visible update dates. Where possible, include first-party evidence from actual work.
For example, a claim about accessibility should reference the relevant W3C standard, while a project insight should identify the project context rather than inventing an industry statistic.
6. Build third-party presence
AI answers may rely on industry publications, directories, reviews, news, academic sources and community discussions. Keep legitimate profiles complete, contribute expertise to relevant publications and earn coverage through work that is genuinely useful.
Avoid purchased reviews, mass guest posts and fake community activity. Inconsistent or manipulative references weaken trust.
7. Add accurate structured data
Use Organization, WebSite, Service, Article, Breadcrumb and other relevant schema types. Structured data should match information visible to users. It helps machines interpret entities and relationships but does not create authority by itself.
8. Track AI visibility
Create a list of 20–50 prompts that represent actual buying and research journeys. Check them monthly across the platforms important to your market. Record whether the brand is mentioned, cited, described accurately and linked.
OpenAI reports that ChatGPT referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes incoming search traffic easier to identify in analytics. Track conversions and engagement, not referral volume alone.
A realistic 90-day plan
Days 1–30: Audit crawl access, entity consistency, analytics, structured data and existing query coverage.
Days 31–60: Improve priority service pages and publish two to four evidence-rich resources around commercial decisions.
Days 61–90: Distribute useful findings, strengthen relevant profiles, earn third-party references and compare citation results against the baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I submit my website directly to ChatGPT?
There is no universal submission that guarantees inclusion. Keep public content accessible to OAI-SearchBot, build credible information and monitor referrals and citations. Always verify current crawler guidance in OpenAI's official documentation.
Does schema markup make a business appear in AI answers?
Schema helps systems interpret entities and content, but it does not guarantee inclusion. Search accessibility, relevance, authority, evidence and third-party presence remain essential.
Should I create an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file can offer a concise machine-readable guide to important content, but it is not a substitute for crawlable HTML, internal links, robots rules or sitemaps. Treat it as an optional discovery aid, not a ranking mechanism.
How do I measure traffic from ChatGPT?
Use analytics referral and campaign data, including the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter documented by OpenAI. Connect visits to meaningful outcomes such as enquiries, bookings or qualified reading behavior.
